Muhammad Talha Amin Baruah is a young and inspiring Assamese Muslim historian and author from Assam. Born on 23 September 2006 in Faujdaripatty, Nagaon, Talha grew up with a deep appreciation for his heritage. From an early age, he set out to write about the parts of history that often go unnoticed, believing every community and every voice deserves recognition. His writing journey began not out of a desire for fame, but from a need to give forgotten stories their rightful place in Assam’s and India’s tapestry.
Talha’s dedication was nationally recognised when he was honoured with the prestigious Rabindranath Tagore Samman 2025 for his works as a historian—a proud milestone that highlighted his contribution to literature and historical scholarship.
His first book, ‘The Shamli Uprising: Unsung Indian Freedom Fighters’ (2024), shines a spotlight on the lesser-known revolutionaries involved in the 1857 Shamli revolt. These unsung heroes played key roles in India’s freedom struggle, and Talha’s careful research brought their courage to light for readers across the world. The book’s international publication was a proud moment, giving global visibility to these often-overlooked figures.
In 2025, Talha released ‘Conquest of Sindh: Biography of Amir Imaduddin Muhammad bin Qasim (d.715)’. Talha’s aim was to show the nuanced and human side of Muhammad bin Qasim—his policies of respect toward Hindus and Buddhists, and his quest for peaceful coexistence. Through this, Talha champions pluralism and urges readers to see multiple sides to every story.
Talha also contributed to history anthologies, collaborating with other writers to reflect the diversity of Indian heritage. He strongly believes that when many voices tell a story, the record becomes richer and more accurate.
A cornerstone of Talha’s career is his focus on Assamese Muslim heritage. As an Assamese Muslim himself, he’s committed to sharing the achievements, struggles, and stories of his community. He is a staunch advocate for secularism, harmony, and Hindu-Muslim unity—values that run through all his work. Talha’s first article about Assam’s history was published in Dainik Ganadhikar on 6 March 2025, and he has since written for various newspapers and platforms in Assam, Kashmir, and Meghalaya. Before writing articles and books on history he was a pop culture article writer.
One of Talha’s most notable works was published in the Assamese weekly Saptahik Mujahid. In this article, he presented historical evidence and arguments demonstrating the historical presence of Ahom Muslims, a topic rarely discussed before. This important contribution sparked meaningful conversations on Assam’s syncretic culture and plural past.
Talha’s interests also stretch beyond Assam. He explores the shared and unique experiences of Muslim communities across India and the world, weaving their stories into the global human narrative.
Despite his youth, Talha is already respected for making history approachable and relevant. He regularly participates in community events, youth workshops, and online forums to inspire others to explore their history and take pride in their roots.
With every book and article, Muhammad Talha Amin Baruah—proud Assamese Muslim and historian—strives to ensure that history remembers every hero, every community, and every culture. His work is a call for unity, pride, and the celebration of Assam’s and India’s diverse past.
